Glocalization,Event and Contemporary Nordic Environmental Fiction

Abstract:Glocalization in the ecological sense is to think globally and act locally, which gives rise to two questions:How to make use of the traditional culture? How to localize the issues of globalization and environment? A critical analysis of the glocalization of Nordic environmental fiction will offer us some clues.Trolls are the mythical archetypes of Nordic literature.Since the 1980s,there have appeared some fictional works that rewrite stories of trolls, such as The Forest of Hours from Sweden, and Troll:A Love Story from Finland. In those works, trolls are used to create fascinating stories with new literary narratives. The Forest of Hours reveals that the animal instinct is of great importance for understanding individual persons, while in Troll:A Love Story, the troll story, which is narrated in postmodern, fragmented style, reflects the conditions of animals living in urban space.Through this Finnish story, one realizes that animality is but discursive construction and that the distinction between culture and nature is arbitrary. The innovation of troll narratives in contemporary Nordic fiction bears both the influence of globalization and the traditional culture, which is demonstrative of glocalization.
