Integrating Positivism Quantitative Approach and Hermeneutical Qualitative Approach: Weber’s Instruction
Xie Lizhong (Peking University)
Abstract The positivism quantitative approach has the characteristics of being quantitative, objective and universal, but it also has a fatal shortcoming, i.e., it is impossible to determine the causal relationship between variables. On the contrary, the hermeneutics qualitative approach can provide a good causal explanation for social science research, but the objectivity of its research results is relatively weak due to the characteristics of being subjective, non-quantitative, and case-specific. Weber’s sociological attempts to combine the advantages of positivism quantitative approach and the hermeneutics qualitative approach, provide a relatively reliable causal analysis model for social studies. This provides a valuable reference for us to understand the relationship between positivism quantitative approach and hermeneutics qualitative approach today.
