摘　要：

 “蛮族人”是希腊人对一切非希腊人的统称，是他们建构的与“自我”构成二元对立的“他者”。这是古风时代伊奥尼亚人的一项发明。伊奥尼亚人是在与外族相遇的情境中开始将外族他者化的。希波战争后涌现的各类蛮族意象几乎均属“雅典制造”。希波战争、雅典民主、奴隶制等因素是大量制造蛮族的主要动力。大量制造的结果是，“蛮族人”作为对所有非希腊族群的蔑称，最终为所有希腊人所熟知。

Inventing the Barbarian: A New Inquiry into the Greeks’ Construction of the Other

Abstract The“barbarian”was a generic term used by the Greeks to describe all non-Greeks and thus formed the“Other”whom they constructed as the antithesis of the“Self”. This“Other”was an Ionian invention in the Archaic period. It was in the context of their encounters with foreign ethnic groups that the Ionians began “othering”them. A large number of images of barbarians emerging shortly after the Persian Wars were almost “made in Athens”. The Persian Wars, the Athenian democracy and slavery among others constituted dynamics of fabricating barbarians on large scale.  As a result, the“barbarian”, as a pejorative designation for all the

non-Greek ethnic groups, came to be well known among all the Greeks.
