Reinventing “Grassroots China”
Realistic History in The Sun Shines over the Sanggan River
Zhang Jun (Sun Yat-Sen University)
Abstract The long novel The Sun Shines over the Sanggan River was written on the basis of Ding Ling’s personal experience during the land reform. Both the land reform movement and the writing of novels can be regarded as part of the revolutionary reconstruction of “grassroots China”. While recording the rural political and economic structure and the cultural identity structure concerning the “body” and “heart” of farmers, the novel also dilutes and delves the specific process of “turning over the body” and “turning over the heart”. This rewriting is a reasonable appeal of socialist realism to create a new culture with such core values as equality, labor and collectivity.
Key words The Sun Shines over the Sanggan River ; agrarian revolution; socialism; realism; Ding Ling
