The Relationship Between Hobbes's Political Philosophy And Religion Reconsidered
From the Perspective of the Death of Leviathan
Chen Jiangjin(Wuhan University)
Abstract The scholars mainly understand the relationship between Hobbes’ s political philosophy and Christianity from secular approach and civil religion. However, these two approaches cannot fundamentally explain why Hobbes calls Leviathan “mortal God”. We need to understand Leviathan’ s death in the historical picture as described by Hobbes’ s Christian theology. Hobbes is essentially a pious Christian theologian. In his theoretical picture, theology is not subordinate to secular politics, but secular politics is an integral part of his theological framework. However, it is difficult for Hobbes to achieve his political purpose through his treatment of the relationship between secular politics and theology.
Key words Leviathan; political philosophy; Christianity; secular politics
