Contemporary Korean Scholars' Study on the Dissemination And Reception of Su Shi in the Joseon Dynasty
Chen Qing(Hainan University)
Abstract The Joseon era in the history of the Korean Peninsula lasted for over five hundred years (1392-1910). Between 1945 and 2022, Korean scholars published works on the dissemination and reception of Su Shi during the Joseon era, which mainly focused on three aspects: the study on the reception of Su Shi in Han-style literature during the Joseon era, the reception and research of Su Shi's Odd to Red Cliff and the "Boating at Red Cliff" during the Joseon era, and the textual analysis of Su Shi's writings during the Joseon era. The study on the reception of Su Shi in Han-style literature during the Joseon era, which began in 1964, reached its peak after 2010. Among the scholars, Cho Kyubaek and Liu Sojin have respectively focused on the reception of Su Shi among the literary community and the reception of Su Shi among individual literati, and their contributions have been particularly remarkable. The research on the reception of Odd to Red Cliff and the study of the "Boating at Red Cliff" began in 1975 and have gained momentum since 2010. Some significant poetic and literary collections, such as Renxufanyuelu and Cantoulu which emerged from the "Boating at Red Cliff ", have also become important subjects of study. The collection of Su Shi's works that exist in South Korea is quite extensive, with the majority being printed during the Joseon era or directly imported from the Ming and Qing dynasties. Since 1985, there have been sporadic occurrences of papers introducing versions or conducting textual research. After 2009, there has been a significant increase in the number of achievements. However, a large-scale collective effort has not yet been formed, and the research topics remain relatively dispersed.
